The Zoo York Mixtape | Shaping Things to Come

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xhuq9sSsvV4 The vast majority of the entire skateboarding world had their eyes concentrated on the West Coast throughout the 1980s and early 90s. This was due in large part to the influence of California's famous Z-Boys who had made names for themselves in the late 1970s. Consequently, the East Coast scene that was developing was largely ignored. It would have to take visionaries such as Rodney Smith, Eli Gesner, Adam Schatz and a little skate video to shake things up and change the lay of the skateboarding land. Shake things up they would, and in a big way. It all...

Puerto Rico’s Iguana and the Coquí Mural By Roa

Belgian artist Roa took to Calle Lloveras in San Juan, Puerto Rico for last fall's Los Muros Hablan Festival to produce this magnificent work of an Iguana gripping (perhaps strangulating) a small frog. The frog is a Coquí, a small native amphibian to the island. Meanwhile, Iguanas, which are not native to Puerto Rico, have been creating a lot of problems as they have taken their toll on the economy and the environment. Seek and destroy missions have been formed as a result. A powerful eco-political statement by Roa to be sure. via SAN

Weekend Retrospective | The Legend of Mitch "Blood" Green

In the 1980s there were few stars bigger than Mike Tyson. He was an executioner - an unstoppable force of furious nature who could unleash hell on earth inside a squared circle. Throughout the course of his career Tyson had a number of rivals to contend with: Frank Bruno, Donovan Ruddock, Lennox Lewis and of course Evander Holyfield. But of all his foils there is perhaps none more amusing than the rivalry Tyson shared with the legend otherwise known as Mitch "Blood" Green. It all started in early 1986. Tyson was quickly moving up the rankings and was destined to...

Essential Viewing | Jay Z's short art film Picasso Baby

0 Last week we mentioned that Jay Z's short performance art Picasso Baby film would be debuting on HBO this past Friday night. In case you missed it you can catch it here. "Concerts are pretty much performance art ... The venues change. Just by nature of the venues, the performance changes. If you're in a smaller venue, it's a bit more intimate so you get to feel the energy of the people," Jay Z explains. Even more fascinating is listening to Hov briefly discuss the historical significance and influence of the arts scene on hip hop in its infancy....
